Depression and Guilt for Caregivers
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Maria_Sandella]Maria Sandella

Being a new caregiver is hard and can lead to depression if you let it. Not everyone who becomes a caregiver will experience depression and the negative feelings that often go with depression. Don’t look at caregiving as something that if you do you will end up depressed and on medication. The depression begins to show up when you shut yourself off from what is familiar to you and solely concentrate on caregiving.

In an effort to provide the best possible care to your loved one, the caregiver often sacrifices their own emotional and physical needs, and by doing this even the strongest, most capable person can feel the strain. The feelings of anger, sadness, anxiety, isolation, exhaustion, and then the guilt that is often accompanied by these feeling is a heavy toll for anyone to take.

Depression and guilt often go hand-in-hand. When you get angry at the person you are caring for and begin to have negative feelings towards them, feelings of guilt occur, followed by feelings of depression for feeling that way. It is a cycle that continues until you seek help.

We all have negative feelings from time to time, but when these feelings become intense and leave a caregiver totally drained of energy, becoming angered at their loved one for no particular reason, and crying frequently, these may be warning signs of depression. You need to be concerned about depression if the sadness and crying are continuous and the negative feelings are unrelenting.

It is unfortunate that some still think of depression as a sign of weakness rather than what it is, a sign that something is out of balance. Ignoring the feelings you have will not make them go away, it is important that you seek out medical help.

Symptoms of Depression

Most people’s experience with depression is different. Some people may be sad for months while others may have a more intense and sudden change in the way they look at things. The degree of symptoms and type of symptoms will vary from person to person.

If you experience any of the following for longer than 2 weeks you may want to go and talk to your doctor.

• Have your eating habits changed resulting in either a dramatic weight gain or weight loss.

• Have your sleep patterns changed - either sleeping too much or too little.
• Do you fee tired all the time, even after just waking up.

• Do you become easily angered or agitated?

• Do you have the feelings that nothing you do is good enough?

• Are you having thoughts suicide or death?

• Are you experiencing headaches, chronic pain, and digestive disorders that are not responding to treatments?

The above symptoms are warning signs of depression so it is important to talk to your doctor so you can get help. If you don’t feel comfortable using the word depression, inform your doctor that you are ‘feeling down’ or ‘feeling blue’. Your doctor will understand the message you are trying to get across and get you the help you need.

Do People Sometimes Want Depression?

Do People Sometimes Want Depression?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=CD_Mohatta]CD Mohatta

I know it can be very frustrating when someone you care about is depressed and won’t even do simple things to help themselves. I have a friend who has been depressed most of his adult life, often knows what he should do, and won’t do it. He’s pretty much a shut in now. But does he want to be depressed? No. He’s suffering. I don’t think anyone wants to suffer.

I think it’s a case of sometimes we don’t know how hard it is to do something unless we walk in their shoes. I catch myself sometimes doing behaviors that I wish I didn’t do, that I know aren’t good for me, and yet I’m sometimes mystified how to stop. I can understand how this can be for anyone.

Depression can become a safety zone. Often when people are depressed, less change happens in their lives and they want less change. Change can be very scary, but change is also important. Sometimes though, you have to do baby steps to get change happening again.

Whether I am trying to help myself or a friend who is depressed, I try to pay attention to what works and what doesn’t and do more of what works. It’s a simple philosophy, but it works better than anything else. Everyone is a bit different, so no one thing works for everyone. You have to experiment and take notes.

Sometimes people need to be heard. Sometimes instead they need to be interrupted when they start feeling sorry for themselves and saying the same old things that always make them feel depressed. Sometimes taking charge helps, like going to their door and saying, “get dressed, we’re going out today, don’t even think about not coming!” Other times they need to feel their inclinations respected. Which method will work depends on their nature and where they are at the time.

Ultimately, their success is up to them. It may take a lot of time to feel better, but they need support and love and acceptance, and we can help. I just try to pay attention and listen carefully to their feedback of what works for them and what doesn’t.

Psychotic Depression- How It Differs From Clinical Depression

January 26th, 2008

Psychotic Depression - How It Differs From Clinical Depression
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Juliann_Longden]Juliann Longden

About twenty five percent of individuals admitted to hospitals for depression suffer from some form of psychotic depression. These individuals not only suffer from common symptoms but also from hallucinations or delusions. The illness has many similarities to clinical depression, but some important differences as well.

Other mental illnesses, like schizophrenia, can also include symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, or paranoia. However, individuals with this illness generally know that the thoughts or hallucinations are not real. At the same time, diagnosis becomes difficult because many people hide these symptoms, afraid to admit that they have these more socially unacceptable symptoms.

Along with more common depressive symptoms, these individuals may experience anxiety, hypochondria, insomnia, immobility, and cognitive impairment. Scientists don’t know exactly how it develops, but some believe that it may have to do with high levels of cortisol in the blood. Cortisol is a hormone that is produced by the adrenal glands, which is released throughout the day and at times of stress.

The treatments also differ in some ways. Generally, a longer hospital stay is required and a closer follow up may be required for many patients. Mental health professionals have found that tricyclic antidepressants and anti psychotic medications seem to help many patients when they are used in combination. Lithium and electro convulsive therapy are also used to treat the illness, although they are usually second line treatments. Researchers have also been investigating the use of RU-486 (now used as “emergency contraception”) as it appears to dramatically reduce the symptoms.

With treatment, most individuals will experience recovery within a year. Like other forms of the illness, psychotic depression can reoccur, although the symptoms are more likely to happen again than the hallucinations and delusions.  However, diagnosis and treatment are important in preventing re occurrences and treating the symptoms that do come back. As the risk of suicide and other depressive illnesses is greater, it is imperative that individuals are diagnosed and treated properly.

Psychotic depression shares many symptoms with the clinical form of the illness, but is distinguished by the presence of hallucinations and/or delusions. Treatment differs from other types, as the psychotic symptoms must also be treated.

Are You Suffering From Depression?

Are You Suffering From Depression?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dale_Gorman]Dale Gorman

There are few who will go through life completely untouched by depression, with the majority affected either directly through personal experience, or indirectly by having someone close to them such as their partner, child, friend or another family member suffer.

The experience of depression, its severity and symptoms, vary among sufferers. There are, however, a few hallmarks which the majority of sufferers will recognise. These are feelings of worthlessness, loss of motivation (everything feels like ‘too much effort’ and/or feels meaningless) and a general unhappiness with life and self.

Depression is a debilitating condition which affects one’s ability to enjoy life. Left untreated, depression can whittle away a sufferer’s self-confidence and sense of self-mastery (e.g., their sense of being able to ‘cope’ with life). People who are depressed find it hard to find meaning in their lives or to believe in the future. Previously passionate people can become unrecognisable to themselves, their family and friends, as their once full lives are dwarfed by depression.

The loss of, or lack of hope which characterises depression can make sufferers appear extremely pessimistic. Such negativity can take its toll on the depressed person’s loved ones as they try [unsuccessfully] to buoy them up with positive sentiments.

One sufferer once likened her depression to a mental filter or ’shroud’ which distorts thinking and feelings. Indeed, depression tends to permeate all areas of life and to affect a sufferer’s view of themselves and the world. Decision making abilities and energy levels are adversely affected, which can result in normal everyday tasks feeling overwhelming to the sufferer and getting neglected. Sufferers can find it hard to maintain employment and/or other commitments. Sleep may be disrupted and appetite changed (increased or decreased).

When a person’s depression remains untreated their relationships will, over time, inevitably suffer. Feelings of being unable to relate as one once did to others are common, as are feelings of inadequacy. Self-recrimination is also common with sufferers often guilty about the toll their depression is taking on those around them, yet feeling powerless to change it.

Depression often co-exists with anxiety. This can take the form of extreme social anxiety, which, in turn, leads to people withdrawing from and avoiding once enjoyed relationships and social activity. Although the temptation to withdraw from others is strong, giving into this temptation can worsen a person’s depression. Similarly, ’self-medication’ through the use of alcohol and/or illicit drugs (a behaviour regularly seen in sufferers of depression) only serves to worsen depression.

Extreme and/or untreated depression can lead to thoughts of suicide. More often than not a person who has thoughts of suicide does not want to die, but cannot bear the thought of continuing to live with their depression. Accordingly, intervention/treatment is paramount.

Successful treatment of depression is regularly underpinned by the compassion and support of others, but also requires the sufferer to be compassionate towards oneself. If you believe you are suffering from depression, show yourself some compassion today and take the first step towards getting better. You can do this by enlisting the support of someone such as your G.P. who will be able to offer a diagnosis and/or offer a referral to a psychologist (or similar professional).

Depression in Later Stages of Menopause- Tips to Manage Depression and Anxiety With Menopause

Depression In Later Stages Of Menopause - Tips To Manage Depression And Anxiety With Menopause
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Dr._Eswararamanan_VR]Dr. Eswararamanan VR

Right at the outset a misconception must be cleared out. In women going through amid life crisis, their approaching menopause is not the cause of all the mood swings and depressions that she undergoes. On the contrary, it is a fluctuation in quantities of estrogen secreted by the hormonal glands that causes such an emotional overhaul. This can be a difficult time for a woman. And this fluctuation of the hormone levels occurs more in women than in men, and therefore women may face twice as many emotional problems as men would. In case one has a family history of such a condition, the levels of depression may also depend on that.

Another misconception that comes with the onset of menopause is that depression is a normal thing during these phases. Yes, it is normal, but it need not necessarily occur. The depression levels can be easily controlled if one accepts the various alterations that are happening within the human body. Menopause or the dropping of the estrogen levels does not directly cause mood swings or depression. On the contrary, it is the inability to cope up with such changes that leads to such a mental condition.

Some of the symptoms to look out during the menopause are:

* anxiety

* irritability

* changes in body temperature

* sleeping problems

* tiredness due to weakening of bones

* mental fatigue

* forgetfulness

However, all of the above are just the resultant manifestations of the actually menopausal onset. Once a woman enters her mid thirties to mid forties the ovaries produced by the womb decrease considerably. Ovulation becomes erratic as a result of which the monthly menstrual cycle also fluctuates from the normal time period.

Many women who undergo severe depression during this time do so because they are unable to understand the changes within their body. The body had been used to a particular pattern for about 25 to 30 years of a woman’s life. Now suddenly the disruption of such a routine pattern may result in anxiety. This inevitably leads to a feeling of hopelessness of approaching old age. This is what leads to depression.

Even though a positive mental outlook and taking the changes in one’s stride can go a long way in countering such a condition, medical help must be sought in case the problem persists or aggravates. Problems related to the heart and bones are most commonly prevalent during menopause. The prescription of anti depressants by doctors and the undergoing of the hormone replacement therapies are the two most common approaches taken to cure such symptoms.

Attacking Anxiety Depression - Getting to the Heart of The Ailment

Attacking Anxiety Depression - Getting To The Heart Of The Ailment
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Flor_Serquina]Flor Serquina

Personal circumstances notwithstanding, treating anxiety and depression varies from patient to patient due to the different severity levels and underlying circumstances that brought about the disorder in the first place. Treatment will be very dependent on prior evaluation and diagnosis to come up with an effective combination of medication, psychotherapy or group therapy.

Recognizing the Problem

There are a few basics a patient will have to understand and accept, if he is to undergo an intensive treatment for his anxiety or depression. The patient must accept the factual presence of stress, depression, or anxiety. With the acceptance comes the awareness as to how the disorder or disorders affect the body and how the body reacts - for example, how diarrhea or constipation or continuous severe migraine may be associated with the underlying anxiety.

Thereupon, the cause of the depression or anxiety must be identified objectively - is your sexual relationship causing you undue stress, for example. Then, you must be able to determine whether you are able to cope with the cause by yourself or you will need extra help. Sometimes, a supportive circle of family and friends will help you identify the causes and effects of the depression, even as you yourself deny the presence of such.

Medications in Attacking Anxiety Depression

Any of a number of antidepressants may be prescribed. These drugs are used to harmonize the brain and its neuro-transmitters so that depression is, to a certain extent, controlled. Antidepressants, MAOI or monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and SSRIs (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors) may be prescribed by your doctor.

These drugs help to control enzyme production of monoamine oxidase that affects neuro-transmitters, while others control serotonin production and absorption. Whatever is prescribed, your doctor will be in the best position to choose the kind of drug to suit body types and accompanying symptoms of depression.

Systems of Psychotherapy

Depression and anxiety can maybe possibly their roots in problems of coping. Psychotherapy is thus introduced as it is a relational tool that helps the patient cope by increasing a general sense of self-esteem and well being to counteract the guilt feelings, the feelings of inadequacy, or suicidal instincts.

Psychotherapy, whether the verbal or creative type (like engaging the patient in communication outlets such as drama and plays, narratives or essays), is based on some main therapeutic systems such as cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, existential psychotherapy, humanistic psychotherapy, strategic therapy, systemic psychotherapy, and integrated psychotherapy - or it could be a combination of several systems.

Lifestyle Coping Mechanisms

In attacking anxiety depression, sometimes lifestyle changes are also needed. A regular regimen of fitness and exercise can be effective in mild anxiety or depression states. Dietary restrictions also can be beneficial. A more social and outwardly approach to life with the support of the family or circle of friends will also be a primary factor to consider in treatment.

“Conditioning” Yourself

The act of self-conditioning is more known in the business community as the act of persuasion. Persuasion here is not used merely to move others to act but the self to act.

Self-conditioning can be done in many ways. One effective way is to identify the cause of agitation and think of ways on how you can just forget about the cause of agitation.

For instance, criticism from the boss gets you agitated. What should you do whenever he gives you criticism? First, you must think of “magic words or phrase” that you should implant in your head. In this case, you can say to yourself, “Feedback is good. It is for my growth. I should take feedback in a positive way.”

Next, say it to yourself while you are brushing your teeth, combing your hair, washing the dishes or doing other things that leave your mind to travel far.

You must do this even before the source of agitation strikes. You are already conditioning yourself on how to react whenever this stressor attacks. By the time it comes your way, your mind will process it as not a threat since you have told yourself many times that feedback must be taken positively.

But whatever method of attacking anxiety depression is resorted to, it is ultimately up to the depressed patient to treat himself and rid himself of the disorder.

Using Massage to Treat Depression- A Powerful Anti-Depressant

January 19th, 2008

Using Massage To Treat Depression - A Powerful Anti-Depressant
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Robert_Vignoli]Robert Vignoli

There are many different types of depression and more people each year seem to be suffering from this illness. Using massage to treat depression can work well in some cases. A massage therapist must be careful not to claim to be able to cure severe depression through any techniques, however, as severe depression should be treated by psychiatric expert.

People are depressed for a variety of reasons. Often, depression has to do with a situation, such as losing a job or experiencing a trauma in ones life. In these cases, a massage therapist can use techniques to help this person overcome this overwhelming feeling of sadness. Techniques include working with the abdominal muscles as well as those in the head and neck to help straighten out a person who is suffering from this form of depression. Many people with this disease find that their body structure is actually collapsed due to the depression. It begins with the abdominal muscles, where the organs that store the cells that fight for the immune system are stored beneath. Because the body is in such a collapsed state, a depressed person runs the risk of acquiring illness or disease as their immune system is not working properly.

By restoring the body to the full state prior to collapse, a massage therapist can assist a person with depression to keep their body healthy. It can return the human structure back to prior the collapse. In addition to working with the abdominal muscles and head and neck muscles, the massage therapist will also incorporate working on the arms and shoulders of a depressed person.

Many people with chronic depression find themselves in pain much of the time. They are often told that the pain is all in their head as there may be nothing actually physically wrong with them. Many will complain of stomach or back pain, yet despite tests, they have no physical ailments. A massage therapist can help a person with chronic depression alleviate some of the pain that they feel that is most likely due to the collapse of their abdominal muscles and skeletal system due to the depression. While a massage therapist cannot cure a patient of depression, they can certainly treat a patient with depression and help them with painful symptoms of this disease.

Some people suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder Syndrome, also known as SADS. This occurs during the winter months when there is not enough sunlight. When deprived of light, people tend to become depressed, have mood swings or even become ill. Studies have shown that people who work in the evening are more prone to cancer than those who work during the day. This is believed to be because of the depression they suffer from not being in the sunlight. The depression affects the body, the abdominal cavity and shuts down the immune system. Light therapy is often used in addition to massage therapy for patients who are suffering from SADS. A massage therapist who treats such a patient can use certain lights that emulate sunlight during the therapy session. The lights have been known to help individuals suffering from SADS and the massage techniques can get the body out of the collapsed state and into good working order.

If you are a massage therapist who is using massage to treat depression, remember that you are not a psychologist and if your patient is talking of suicide or seems severely depressed, he or she must seek professional help from a licensed psychiatric professional prior to getting massage treatments. For those who have situational depression or SADS, massage therapy can do wonders to help them overcome this illness.

Omega 3 and Depression- Use of Omega 3 for Depression Treatment

January 17th, 2008

Omega 3 and Depression - Use of Omega 3 for Depression Treatment
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Micheal_Thomas]Micheal Thomas

Feeling down and depressed, Eat Fish! This is what doctors and researchers throughout the world recommend. Low intake of Omega 3 and depression have always been interlinked. Omega 3 fatty acids cure and control depression effectively.

Depression affects more than 25 million Westerners over the age of 18 every year. With an increase in the intake of omega 6 fatty acids and processed foods, the incidence of depression cases is also increasing.

Use of Omega 3 and depression treatment are linked since DHA and EPA fats form the main component of brain cells and control brain’s functioning. EPA is considered the single vital nutrient that controls communication between nerve cells.

Another link between Omega 3 and depression is that Omega 3 fats trigger the secretion of ‘Serotonin’ a hormone that improves mood and is responsible for controlling anger, anxiety, depression and other mental disorders.

Fish oils are recommended to pregnant women since they help in the development of brain and retinal membranes in infants. Consumption of Omega 3 supplements also lower the rate of post-partum depression in pregnant women.

To correct this imbalance, you need to include an omega 3 rich diet in your daily routine. Omega 3 are polyunsaturated fats that are essential for our body but cannot be synthesized directly. The only way we can get omega 3 fats is through our diet.

The dietary sources of omega 3 mainly include cold-water fishes such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, tuna and Hoki. Green leafy vegetables, tofu, soybeans and walnuts are also rich in Omega 3 fatty acids.

Plant-based sources and certain vegetable oils like flaxseed oil, canola oil and sunflower oil contain ALA or Alpha-linolenic fatty acids that need to be converted into EPA and DHA fats, the two most important omega 3 fats that can be instantly absorbed by our body.

This is the main reason why fish oils are considered the richest source of Omega 3 fats. Not only do they provide good amounts of EPA and DHA but they are also safer than eating fish in the natural form.

The growing levels of toxins such as mercury, metals in the ocean waters have made eating fish in large amounts a questionable practice. Consumption of such toxins may lead to various skin problems and even brain hemorrhage.

Molecularly Distilled fish oils are free of all toxins and are safe for human consumption. However, choosing the right fish oils is quite tricky considering the thousands of supplements available in the market.

As we mentioned already, buy molecularly distilled fish oils since they are purified and do not contain any contaminants that can hamper your health. The second point to note is buying a supplement that has good amount of both EPA and DHA fats.

One such superior quality fish oil is the one extracted from Hoki fish. Hoki is a cold-water species and is found in the Southern oceans of New Zealand. The fish oil extracted from Hoki fish has 40% higher DHA content than other oils.

To see the effect of using [http://www.omega-3-fish-benefits.com/Omega-3-Depression.html]Omega 3 for Depression, consume fish oils regularly and your mental and physical health will certainly improve remarkably.

Love and Depression

Love and Depression
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Christina_Sponias]Christina Sponias

Your depression is inevitable if you love someone very much and that person either does not love you the same way or there are few hurdles that hinder you to be together.

Love actually transforms you into a slave or completely dominates over you.

This kind of feeling is actually a disease that hits you badly. You become weak and also dependent on your beloved. When this person does not care for you, you feel upset and all alone.

There might be several reasons for your depression if you are in love and you like none of these. On the contrary, you also feel that everything is against you.

Love is a very serious and problematic disease and it provokes several other diseases in your body. Above all, it also ruins your conscience. You actually cannot get rid of it. On the other hand, the positive aspect of love is to seek happiness from it. In that case you have to transform this disease into medicine to cure all your pains.

Love is truly wonderful when it is reciprocal and the person you love is very nice, caring and ready to give you anything you want. This would be the ideal recognition of your dreams!

However, reality is different and far away from the perfection… You can have couple of problems. You actually don’t know whether this person really loves you or not. Some times the person also does not come up to your expectations, which ultimately creates problems.

You may also enter into a relationship that you have never dreamt of. You can feel this, because the person you love does not care for you as much as you do or maybe because their personality is immature, selfish and mysterious. This type of person is not the one that you desire. Since you are in love, so you ignore these things in good faith and hope that he or she will change and care for you, share life with you, etc. Actually nothing changes as per your good wishes.

There are ample of different cases, where love and depression can be correlated with each other.

You actually need some guidance to deal with these problems, which depend upon several factors like psychological type of both of you as well as your life. This direction you can only seek in the messages of your dreams, which are produced by the unconscious side of your psychic sphere. These messages are wise and saintly and also help you understand the personality of your lover. These develop your own personality the same way to make you more mature and sensitive. By seeking guidance from the unconscious through dream messages, your happiness will be inevitable and long lasting.

Dreams are very meaningful. Dreams produce important messages of the unconscious side of your psychic sphere that guides you and protects you from the craziness that you already inherit in the wild side of your conscience. It actually remains in its original pattern without the change in conscious. Love makes you very sensitive and irrational. You therefore make several mistakes, which you must avoid.

The unconscious is well aware that love plays a very important role in your life, so it transmits several dreams to you with specific information about the person whom you love. The purpose of this information is to protect you, keep your human conscience alive and also develop it in the best possible manner.

When you are in love, you need protection and guidance to direct you, what to do. You need this direly, as you are depending on the behaviour of a very special person for you. So, without having proper guidance and knowledge of what to do, you feel very weak and drained.

You receive free help and direction in your dream messages. I have extended my research on Carl Jung’s study of the ignored side of the human psychic sphere through dream interpretation and discovered the wild conscience. So I can say that the translation you can have today is more clear, accurate and easy to comprehend as compared to Jung’s dream interpretation, which is complicated, difficult to comprehend and apply.

By translating your dreams messages, you will gather the information about the person you love and everything important for you in this regard. It is all free of charge and as long as you want. Besides that you will also become a genius and will be protected from craziness and depression.

Hence, with this protection and guidance, your happiness will be guaranteed and long lasting. This will also not be threatened by the enemies and various unforeseen dangers that may come into your path.

You vision regarding the reality about your actions will certainly be enhanced and you will always receive warnings, advices and guidance in your dreams to keep your lover near you and also to remain happy in your life. Different Types of Depression - Six Common Categories
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Flor_Serquina]Flor Serquina

According to common categorization, there are six different types of depression, which range from relatively mild to severe. Following is a description of each of them.

1. Major (or clinical) depression

This type of depression is what many people normally know about. This is the classic depression or what is often referred to as clinical depression.

Psychiatrists define major or clinical depression as that type of depression that dwells on the gloomy end of the spectrum, thus it is likewise referred to as “unipolar depression.” A person with this type of depression gets sad thoughts, unable to control it, stays with being sad for a long period of time and is most likely to hate himself rather than other people for being the way he is.

A person with this type of depression needs utmost supervision. He is very likely to inflict harm to himself. Which is why, with clinical depression, a person must be treated with medications. This is to prevent suicide from happening whenever he falls into self-hate and loathing which is very common to this type of depression.

2. Dysthymia or Chronic Depression

The second of the 6 different types of depression is dysthymia more known to many as chronic depression.

With this type of depression, a person usually experiences depression symptoms way milder than that of major depression. However, if a person with major depressive episodes experiences the major blues for weeks or months, a person with chronic depression, on the other hand, feels the blues (although mild) day in and day out for a minimum of two years.

The feeling of hopelessness, sadness, insomnia and having eating disorders are experienced for a long time, as though having those feelings is just part of the daily life, or that sadness is the regular menu of the day. People falling under this type of depression sometimes fall into major depression.

A person with dysthymia or chronic depression requires treatment so as to give the person a chance to live a normal life during his depressed state.

3. Bipolar Depression

If there is unipolar depression there is also bipolar depression. This condition is characterized by mood swings - someone might be extremely happy one moment and then go into a melancholic state within a short period of time. These states are also referred to as “mania” and “hypomania”, the two opposite poles in mental state - thus the term “bipolar”.

4. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

There are people who get depressed during fall or winter - they have what psychiatrists call seasonal effective disorder (SAD). Whenever a certain season hits, they fall into depressed state, their hormones change and they can’t function well, just like a person in a major depression. What’s different with people with SAD is that when the depression season ends, they get well and function normally again.

Stressors for SAD are not limited to changes in climate. It includes celebrations such as a birthday (his or of someone close to him), Valentine’s Day, Christmas or New Year’s eve.

5. Atypical Depression

This type of depression makes someone difficult to live with. The sufferer may become hypersensitive emotionally, go into panic attacks, overeat and oversleep. This may prevent him or her from forming a lasting romantic relationship because the symptoms may drive the other person “nuts”. This type of depression is mild and can easily be cured compared to other types.

6. Psychotic Depression

Of all the different types of depression, psychotic depression is the most severe type. With this type of depression a person experiences hallucinations, hears voices and gets delusional. If a person with mild or major type of depression goes untreated, he or she may suffer from a psychotic breakdown.
